What 12U Looks Like
Add the Read. The instincts get a brain attached: dirt-ball reads, swing reads and count leverage, taught while the game is still slow enough to think in.
Hitting
Aggressive in a zone: hunt middle and middle-in early in the count. A two-strike approach is introduced.
Defense
Know your job on every batted ball: cutoffs, relays, backups and priority calls.
Baserunning
The full read program: dirt balls from every base, first to third, tag-ups and first-and-third.
Pitching
Win the 0-1 and 1-1 pitches, read simple swings and start holding runners.
- Training Focus
- Develop: translating athleticism into the sport, individualized mechanics and movement proficiency
- Field
- 70-ft bases and a 50-ft mound (varies by event)
- Positions
- One primary position and at least two secondary positions, with real innings at each
- Arm Care
- Fastball and changeup only (no breaking balls), 85 pitches a day max
- Playing Time
- At least a third of the defensive innings every game and everyone bats. The first earned roles appear.
By the End of the Season
- Hitters attack the first hittable fastball and can say what they were looking for
- Every defender can name his job on any batted ball
- The team converts dirt balls without a signal
- Pitchers throw strike one more often than not
